I'm excited to become publisher of the Chilkat Valley News. I'm new to town, so it's important you know who I am and what my plans are.
I grew up in Indiana and joined the U.S. Army after college. I trained as a combat medic, was stationed in Germany and completed a tour in Ramadi, Iraq. During the four years I served in the military, I developed a passion for reading and writing.
After I was honorably discharged, I enrolled in the journalism program at Indiana University. I reported for the local public radio station until I graduated with a B.A. in journalism with a focus in enterprise reporting.
I landed my first full-time job as a public radio reporter at KYUK in Bethel. I later moved to Petersburg where I worked for its weekly newspaper, the Petersburg Pilot. I also spent three summers commercial fishing in Southeast and in Bristol Bay.
I'm fishing in the bay for a few weeks this summer to help pay for the paper, and a bunch of people are pitching in to help keep the CVN going while I'm gone.
Since I took over last week, our team has updated the website and we now offer two free articles a week. We will also post stories, photos and updates throughout the week on our Facebook page. If you haven't already, check out our new site and like us on Facebook.
I've already received a ton of support from community members and it means a lot to me. Thank you.
I'm sure this support will ebb and flow. Newspapers don't always publish what people like to read, but they serve a critical role. In my view, a local newspaper should be a mirror of the community it serves. We don't always like what we see, but it's an accurate reflection of who we are.
I'm excited to join the fray in this beautiful, engaged and scrappy little town and to get to know better the people who call Haines home.
