Chilkats launch version of historic seafarer

Klukwan villagers recently launched a 36-foot, sea-going canoe, the first of its kind to ply local waters in about 200 years.

About 20 carvers and villagers gathered at Chilkat State Park a few weeks ago to see the "head" or "longtail" canoe's maiden voyage. The boat is distinguished by its thin, long ends, with a large surface area for a painted design. It seats 15 comfortably.

New Chilkat Center foundation aims for self-sufficiency

The new non-profit Foundation for the Chilkat Center for the Arts approved its bylaws this week, in a step by the center's board of trustees toward achieving some financial and political independence from the Haines Borough government.

The members of the foundation board--the same people who have been appointed by the borough assembly to act as a board of trustees for the center--incorporated as a non-profit under state law in July.

The foundation board intends to assume greater responsibility for the financing operations at the Chilkat Center, with the borough--which owns the building--retaining the responsibility for maintenance.

Will the church go up in flames?

"Fireman, save that church!" was the cry yesterday when a group of citizens headed by Mrs. Eunice Benson halted the burning of the old Haines Presbyterian Church scheduled for today as part of the training of firefighters assembled in Haines.

Mrs. Benson has called a meeting for Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the school gym to enlist public help to preserve the church, long a landmark in town, which had been scheduled for destruction. She said she hopes to turn the building into a cultural center and meeting place for Haines.
