Pond Produces Toads Galore

Herpatologist Tim Shields discovers a softball-sized mound of juvenile western toads, called “metamorphs,” near a pond at the Haines airport early this month. Shields hopes upcoming improvements at the airport can spare the pond. Toad populations in Southeast declined in the 1980s and 1990s.
