Alex Hotch drops off old cans of paint at last week's annual hazardous waste collection event sponsored by the Haines Borough. The borough collected 15 drums and four cartons of liquid waste (mostly paint), about 100 car batteries and 225 gallons of used motor oil. The borough had only budgeted to collect 10 drums and two cartons. Steve Haavig of Carson Dorn said participation may have been boosted by Haines Friends of Recycling's simultaneous scrap metal recycling event on Small Tracts Road.
