State election Tuesday
October 28, 2010
Voters will cast ballots in Alaska’s general election Tuesday. Poll hours are 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the American Bald Eagle Foundation, Klehini Valley Fire Hall and Klukwan’s tribal house.
The ballot includes five candidates for the U.S. Senate. Republican incumbent Lisa Murkowski is running a write-in campaign in a three-way race with Republican Joe Miller and Democrat Scott McAdams.
Voters also will choose among candidates for Alaska governor, the U.S. House of Representatives and Alaska House of Representatives.
Two bonding propositions, a ballot measure to increase Alaska’s number of legislators and districts, and the retention of judges also are up for consideration.
According to the sample ballot language, the proposed constitutional amendment would "increase the number of state legislators from 60 to 66," with 44 serving in the House and 22 in the Senate.
Six new legislative districts would be created as a result, four in the state House and two in the state Senate.
The change would go into effect Jan. 1, 2011, after a new redistricting plan is adopted based on the 2010 census.
Major party candidates include Democrat Harry Crawford and Republican Don Young for the U.S. House Seat; Republican Sean Parnell and Democrat Ethan Berkowitz for governor, and Democrat Robert Beedle and Republican Bill Thomas for state House of Representatives.
