Heli-ski discussion Tuesday
January 13, 2011
Both the Haines Borough’s heli-skiing work group and Haines Borough Assembly committee-of-the-whole are scheduled to meet Tuesday to discuss a draft of an ordinance for heli-skiing code.
The work group meeting is set for 3:30 p.m., with a break before the 6 p.m. committee-of-the-whole meeting in the assembly chambers.
A heli-skiing ordinance was introduced last year, so changes would be submitted as a substitute ordinance. As of the work group’s Wednesday meeting, members had not reached a consensus on issues such as revisions to a map of allowed areas and adjustments to caps for skier days, photographer days and the maximum number of permits to be awarded for a season to run from Feb. 1 to May 3.
The work group will present its recommendations to the committee-of-the-whole Tuesday.
The ordinance is slated for further discussion at the Tuesday, Jan. 25, assembly meeting, where it would follow a public hearing process before adoption.
"There’s no way this is going to be adopted by the start of the heli-skiing season, but we don’t want it to run until the end of the season, either," borough manager Mark Earnest said.
