Fishing safety class offered
April 7, 2011
Commercial fishermen interested in taking a free, vessel-safety and drill conductor course in Haines May 18-19 should contact the Alaska Marine Safety Education Association (AMSEA) at 907-747-3287 or go to http://www.amsea.org.
Eight participants are required for the course to be held. The 18-hour course would be held at Haines High School and would include a pool practicum.
The course meets the training requirements for commercial fishing vessels and includes hands-on practice in a vessel, and in the water, with emergency equipment that should be onboard commercial vessels including PFDs, life rafts, immersion suits, EPIRBS, and fire extinguishers.
Emergency procedures will include man overboard, abandon ship, firefighting, and flooding control.
The course is funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and the U.S. Coast Guard.
For more information, contact Deborah Roesch at AMSEA at the above number.
