Haines too much like a social club
May 26, 2011
Post reading the Goodman-Hess story, I was pleased to read the court decision. I have nothing against Mr. Goodman but I feel one of the biggest problems cankering Haines is it functions as a social club and not as a government, business, or an entity that’s willing to make sacrifices. Too many things are swept under the rug, or heads are turned the other way because people making the decisions favor the person under scrutiny. In Haines, more than average opportunities are granted to people because of who they know or who they’re popular with, not necessarily because of qualifications. I get it. I don’t want to be the bad guy to any of my friends or anyone who seems nice or hasn’t personally offended me.
That being said, looking at the big picture, we make rules or laws because we see how they will benefit the whole, not the friend of the jury. From my observances and experiences in life, I see Haines hurting itself when it does this. Progress is only achieved when sacrifice is required and that means making the tough decisions. Don’t let Haines atrophy anymore, let the court decision bring to light this elephant in the room called Haines. If you keep telling the club members "yes" and rules "no," you end up with a global recession that has consequences on everyone.
