Taxi service offers electric alternative
June 9, 2011
A new taxi service is offering an electric alternative to gas transportation.
The Z Taxi pedicab offers service throughout town, including to the ferry terminal and airport. People can hail the cab on the street or tours are available for booking.
Z Taxi is owned and operated by Mountain Rymon and Zelda Layne. The couple built the lightweight bike frame and cab, which uses electric and human power to operate. Layne said the taxi carries 2-3 passengers, with about a 400-pound limit. They will soon have a bicycle trailer on the cab to carry luggage.
There is a minimum charge of $5. A ride from downtown to the ferry terminal costs $15. Each additional passenger is $5.
Layne said they created the service because they wanted to offer Haines an electric transportation alternative.
