Harbormaster to leave April 1; apply by March 29

“I wish the organization and the community well,” Barrett wrote in his letter dated Feb. 29. “My life has been enriched by my experience here but I must spend more time with my family and devote more time to my health than is possible while in this position.”
Barrett said his resignation’s effective date of April 1 “is not set in stone.” “I’ve offered to help the manager with any transition that may occur,” he said.
Barrett started as Haines harbormaster in August 2010 and previously worked as harbormaster and city manager in Whittier. “I haven’t been Outside for five years.”
He recently took a month of leave for medical reasons he said are “generally related” to the issues referenced in his resignation letter.
“I’m turning 62 this year, and I need to pay a little more attention to the pleasures in life, and not so much in public administration,” Barrett said. “I’ve really enjoyed my experience here, and I really like the people that I work with and I like the people of Haines, but I just want to approach it from a different direction for a while.”
Barrett said he plans to stay in Haines. “I’m not retiring. I will probably be looking to some new endeavor that pleases me.”
According to the borough’s fiscal year 2012 budget, Barrett was slated to collect $67,544 in gross earnings. That included a $24.42 hourly wage plus 457.3 overtime hours.
The harbormaster job description posted this week said the selected candidate will be paid $23.97 to $24.87 per hour. The minimum requirements for applicants are a high school diploma or equivalent and two years’ experience in law enforcement, harbor management or a related field.
The first review of applications is set for March 29.
