Swim-a-thon raises $14,892

The Haines Dolphins swim team combined to swim 3,542 lengths of the pool in the annual Swim-a-Thon fundraiser.

The 23 participants swam a total of more than 50 miles and raised $14,892, just under the $15,000 goal, said coordinator Sarah Posey.

“This is amazing when looked at per capita,” she said.

The Dolphins tallied almost $650 per swimmer, trouncing last year’s record-setting average of $462, when 43 swimmers collected about $20,000.

Swim-a-Thon is the team’s largest fundraiser. Swimmers seek pledges for each length of the pool they swim or flat donations.

The top three fundraisers were Skye Posey, $3,163; Kamakana Kanahele, $1,080; and Jackson Long, $940.

Eight Dolphins completed the maximum 200 lengths within the two-hour limit: Madeline Andriesen, Alexandria Chapin, Naomi and Rebekah Green, Lydia Haxton, Skye Posey, Elena Saunders and Haley Sweet-Cushing.

Rebekah Green, 16, the team’s oldest swimmer, was the first to finish.

“Her sister Naomi (age 11), was last out of the water, using every second of the 120 minutes to complete all 200 lengths for the first time ever,” Sarah Posey said.

Another 13 Dolphins swam at least 100 lengths: Sadie Anderson, Lydia Andriesen, Haley and Hannah Boron, Aireona Davis, Kamakana Kanahele, Brennan and Keegan Palmieri, Teya Silkman, Maikeli Tupou, James and Zander Willard, and Saldie Wilson.

Posey noted two children in Dolphin swim lessons – Jackson Long, 6, and Rio Ross-Hirsh, 5 – each swam 60 lengths, nearly a mile.

The Dolphins collected donations through April 13.
