Pancakes raise $2,000 for peace efforts
At our annual bike race pancake feed last Sunday, Haines People for Peace raised over $1,700 for the 2012 Chilkat Valley Peace Prize awards and our Building Bridges grant program to the high school student council. This past year the students used the grant funds to help support the Kilimanjaro Orphanage, founded by Dr. Greg Higgins.
Thanks to all those in the community who helped make this year’s fundraiser our most successful ever---from the local egg donators, to the coupon distributors, to the cooks and cleanup crew. Special thanks to Cindy Buxton for the gallons of tasty rhubarb syrup, to Diane LaCourse for the classy directional signs and to Carol Mitchell for the eye-catching Building Bridges display, and most of all to the modest master of pancake-making marathons Johnny White.
We are grateful to all those community members and visitors who turned out to munch down some pancakes and stuff their spare change into our collection box. For those who were unable to attend but would like to contribute to the 2012 peace prizes, our display and donation box will be at the bank for the next couple of weeks.
