Haines boys' team salvages JV win against Craig

TweetTraveling 300 miles south to Craig, the Glacier Bear boys’ team dropped two games in varsity play and tallied a junior varsity victory.
Coach Steve Fossman said he wasn’t displeased by the play of his young team. “They passed well and got good shots off,” he said. “The offense is coming together and they are having fewer breakdowns. Some of the JV players are making big improvements.”
“Our ball-handling is improving and if they cheat on defense we have a back cut play that works well,” Fossman said.
On Friday, Craig’s Karl Benolken tallied 17 as the Panthers led throughout and rolled to a 52-36 victory. Kelsey Trojan added nine; Tim Glore, Thaddeus Isaacs and Lincoln Isaacs scored four each, and Trevor Dahlstrom scored three.
Haines scoring included senior Chris Olsen, 8, junior Justin Swinton, 8, junior Kai Franks, 6, senior Caullen Taylor, 4, junior Chevy Fowler, 4, sophomore Keegan Sundburg, 4, and freshman Matthew Green, 2.
In their 56-43 victory Saturday, the Panthers led 16-11 after one period, 27-19 at the half and 40-31 entering the final quarter. Isaacs led the Panthers with 16.
Other Panthers scorers were Benolken, 15, Trojan, 10, and Glore and Thaddeus Isaacs, 6 each. Haines scoring included Franks and Swinton, 15 each, Taylor, 9, and Fowler and Sundburg, 2 each.
Seven Haines junior varsity players scored Friday to steal a win, 38-37. On Saturday, Haines JV lost 48-44. Fowler led the scoring attack in the two contests with 22. Other scorers were Sundburg, 17, sophomore Jordan Badger, 11, freshman Harley Morden, 10, junior John Gross, 8, sophomore Keanu Lynch, 5, Green, 4, and senior Russell Clark, 2.
The boys’ team travels back down to Metlakatla this weekend in what becomes a 1,200-mile up and down road trip to play four games.
