Open pool more frequently, not less
Recently, the Haines pool has been in the news concerning possible funding cutbacks, low user support and operating fewer user hours. I’d like to tell you how much the pool benefits me. I’ve been swimming in Haines for nine years and nearly year-long. Soon after starting again in 2005, I noticed the start of the “Iditaswim” competition in January. The race was my motivation to work at improving motion in a body worn by injury, muscle tension and pain.
In January 2011, an injury forced me to stop. When able to return, progress was gradual with daily swims. I am so grateful that the pool was here at that time, that it was open every day through noon, and that I had friends and a bus service to help in getting there. About a year ago I started using hand paddles to improve efficiency. My stamina is better and increasing lap counts are a good indicator.
My progress in maintaining strength, energy and fitness is directly related to the Haines pool. I’d hate to see closures in swim times when it might be open more, offer senior exercise sessions, shuttle in ship crews, and offer summer rates for kids, etc. It’s a vital part of maintaining my health, fitness and recreation program year-round. Cheers to all at the Haines pool.
