Singer, songwriter, poet and storyteller John Smith will bring his sincere and unpretentious folk music to the Chilkat Center lobby at 8 p.m. Friday.

Friends of John Smith, including Nancy Johnson of Haines, invited the singer to Haines after accompanying him on a “Yoga and Song” retreat last summer in Ireland.

“We toured all over western Ireland and everywhere we went we would go to pubs with Irish music or he would bring people in to perform for us or he would just bring out his guitar and perform informally. He was fabulous, really,” Johnson said.

Music reviews from publications ranging from Performing Songwriter magazine to Sing Out! magazine have praised Smith for his “passionate vocals and intelligent lyrics.”

Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for children and seniors.
