Singer, pianist set to perform Tuesday

The Haines Arts Council is rolling out the Steinway for pianist Sue Kazama and tenor Jay Query, set to perform 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Chilkat Center.

Kazama and Query, who have both performed with the Juneau Lyric Opera, have been playing music together for 10 years and specialize in popular music from the 1500s to the 1930s.

Arts council president Tom Heywood said opera events in Haines usually draw a good turnout, and Kazama and Query’s wide range should appeal to many. “The music will range from centuries old music on up to the American 30s and 40s. It’s not all classical operatic music.”

The recital will include Brahms, Schubert, Bach, Durante and Gershwin.

“This goes with our mission as an arts council, which is to present a great variety of arts,” Heywood said of inviting an operatic duo to perform. “We don’t try to tailor our program to what seems to be the trend, which is why we’ve done dance and swing and classical and opera.”

Kazama has performed as a soloist and in ensembles, as well as for large orchestras. Query has sung in numerous Juneau opera performances including Rossini’s “The Barber of Seville.”

Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for students.
