Doug Olerud named graduation speaker
The Haines High School senior class has chosen businessman and school volunteer Doug Olerud as commencement speaker at this year’s graduation ceremony.
Olerud, 44, is manager and part owner of Olerud’s, Inc. He gave the salutatorian address in 1988. He said this week he felt honored to be chosen. “This is one of the coolest things that’s happened to me in a long time. I hope the kids are happy with the job I do.”
Olerud has served as a radio announcer of Glacier Bear basketball games for eight years, coached junior varsity basketball for two years and served about five years as hoops referee.
“I watched a lot of (the seniors) playing T-ball. I was at their preschool graduation and basketball games and track meets. There’s so many of them I got to know over the years. They’re a really good group of kids,” he said.
High school senior Grace Jones said Olerud knows members of the class through a number of associations and choosing him as speaker was easy. “He knows everyone in the class through sports or other activities. Someone recommended him and we all agreed he should be (our speaker).”
