Pot, seal bomb found at school

Haines School officials last week discovered multiple students in possession of marijuana, drug paraphernalia and a “California” seal bomb, but police aren’t saying much about the incident.

Police responded to the school Thursday, Nov. 20, after school officials located the items. Police initiated a juvenile case, which is confidential and handled through the Division of Juvenile Justice, a section of the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services, said police chief Bill Musser.

The seal bomb wasn’t detonated, and the students weren’t smoking marijuana.

Musser wouldn’t comment on how many students were involved, what grade they are in or whether the illicit materials were found in backpacks, lockers or on students.

Superintendent Ginger Jewell released a statement the day of the incident directing all questions to Musser. “At no time were students in any danger,” she said.

Seal bombs are small explosive devices resembling firecrackers that fishermen use to scare seals away from fishing nets.

“The device was of a type consistent with a commercially produced firework marketed under the name ‘California Seal Bomb,’” Musser said.
