March 19, 2015
Monday, March 16
A Chestnut Drive resident reported finding the door of his residence kicked in when he came home. He had been out of town and was unsure if anything was missing. Police initiated a case.
A business owner came to the station with a copy of an accident report filled out on the state’s online crash report site by a motorist reporting property damage to the business. The report was incomplete. Police told the business owner to contact the state.
A caller asked police to perform a welfare check on a group rafting on the Chilkat River. Troopers were advised. The person called back to report the group made it back to town safely.
A caller near 26 Mile Haines Highway reported a loud bang that sounded like an explosion. Troopers were advised.
An officer reported an unattended camp fire off Beach Road. Dispatch contacted the fire chief, who advised no other action was necessary.
Three traffic stops resulted in a citation for driving without a valid operator’s license and warnings for speeding and failure to stop at a stop sign.
Sunday, March 15
A man reported someone took his cell phone when he was showing it to another person. An officer contacted the person, who returned the cell phone.
The Juneau Police Department asked for help with relaying a death notification to a Juneau resident who was in Haines. An officer and local pastor assisted.
Saturday, March 14
A person living near Chilkat State Park Road reported a break-in and missing firewood. Dispatch contacted troopers, who responded and met with the resident.
Friday, March 13
An officer reported a vehicle off the road near 3 Mile Haines Highway. No one was in the car, which had a Yukon Territory plate. Police contacted the RCMP to get contact information and left a message with the vehicle’s owner.
An officer observed an unsecured gate near a Lutak Road business. Police advised the responsible party, who said they were aware of the situation.
A caller reported a violation of a protective order. An officer investigated and initiated a report.
Thursday, March 12
A caller waiting for the next day’s ferry asked for help with lodging for the night due to lack of money. Ministerial services was contacted and helped the caller.
A snow plow driver working on Sawmill Road near Comstock Road reported a man in a black coat was drinking beer and swearing at him for piling snow near the man’s home. The caller left the area. An officer responded and spoke with the man, who was concerned about a pile of snow melting and the runoff going down to the man’s home.
A caller reported a group traveling from Anchorage to Haines had removed a barrier from the roadway about three hours outside of Haines. Dispatch forwarded the report to troopers and advised the caller this would probably be a Canadian issue.
Wednesday, March 11
A power outage was reported between First and Second avenues. Dispatch contacted the power company, which advised power was out all over town.
Traffic stops resulted in warnings for a defective taillight and inoperable trailer lights.
Tuesday, March 10
An officer reported he was helping motorists on Lutak Road due to icy conditions. State road crews were advised.
Police received a protective order from the court and served it on a Haines resident.
