Everyone benefits from a better harbor
I support the boat harbor expansion. Everyone benefits from a better harbor. This is not just a commercial fisherman issue. The harbor is a main transportation hub for the borough. The new expanded harbor will be full as soon as it is completed. The stall waiting list is greater than the planned stalls.
Financial study? Boat harbors are a service, not an income generator. A percentage of the raw fish tax should go toward the boat harbor budget, like it does in many towns. Instead of all of it going to the general fund at least 25 percent should go directly to the harbors. Raw fish tax total last year was $400,000.
Also a floating breakwater at Letnikof Cove is needed. The floats out there require protection from the north wind. The Haines Borough investment should be protected. Letnikof Cove improvements/repairs in 2014 cost more than $1 million and now it is an unusable wreck due to a winter northerly storm with necessary repairs in 2015 estimated at over $100,000.
