TweetMary Price turned 85 on Thursday, July 28, celebrating at the senior center lunch, with a cake gifted by Carol Clifton as well as a dozen cream puffs. Granddaughter Haley Jo was up from Juneau to help with the festivities. On Saturday, about 30-35 people attended a cake and ice cream social for Mary at the center, including Hazel Englund, 99.
Seasonal residents Dakota Fred Hurt and Jennifer Sheets were married July 30 at Letnikof Cove. Fred’s oldest son Darryl Hurt officiated. Darryl and wife Claudia, along with Fred’s daughter Darla Matlock and husband Landon Matlock, traveled from Corpus Christi, Texas. Son Dustin Hurt of Haines also attended. Jennifer’s mother Billye Turk traveled from Ukiah, Calif., and Jennifer’s daughter Kayla Sheets came from Eugene, Ore. Friends Tony and Minnie Beets of Dawson, Y.T., also attended. The Lack family band from California performed some of the couple’s favorite songs at the ceremony, a “real treat,” Jennifer said. The couple timed the 9 a.m. wedding so they could watch the state fair parade from the reception, held at the Aspen Hotel. “I couldn’t miss the logging show,” Jennifer said. The reception included a Cambria Goodwin wedding cake. The visiting family’s four days in town included a kayak and photography tour with Rainbow Glacier Adventures. Fred, a miner, also surprised the group with a helicopter tour of the Porcupine and Cahoon mining areas. This is Fred’s 13th season in Haines, and Jennifer’s third season here. The couple plans to road trip from their Glendale, Ore., home to Texas once mining season ends in September.
Former resident Ben Egolf and Emily Skocaj of Fort Collins, Colo., were married Sunday. The ceremony took place in Estes Park, Colo., at an outdoor chapel overlooking mountains. Ben’s cousin, former resident Keely Baumgartner of Anchorage, officiated. Parents of the groom are Dan and Joanna Egolf of Haines. Best man was Ben’s brother Will Egolf of Chicago. Groomsmen included Haines residents Kevin Thompson and Michael Ganey and former resident Ryan Josephson of Nampa, Idaho. Other Haines guests included Melissa Ganey, Ben’s aunt Judy Erekson, Lee Heinmiller and Riley Erekson. Ben’s cousin Carlee Heinmiller of Fort Collins and former residents Micah True of Edmonton, Alberta, and Tyler Healy of Palmer also attended. Guests spent the week in Fort Collins rafting rivers and hiking.
Former residents Amanda Claire Smalley and Garrett Reid Phillips were married Saturday at Fort Stevens State Park in Astoria, Ore. Kim Larson of Haines officiated. The couple, who lives in Vancouver, Wash., was first married in Haines by local magistrate John Hutchins in June. Saturday’s wedding and reception took place at the beach at Fort Stevens State Park. Amanda flew Cambria Goodwin to the wedding and Cambria gifted her a three-tiered chocolate cake. Other Haines guests included Kim and Don Phillips, Alisha Young, Brook Cinocco, Tom Ward, Vanessa and Ryan Salmon, Jenae Larson, Brianna Phillips Baarson, Tyler Thomas, Nathan Piper, Darren Pattison, Turner Paul, Ryan Smalley, Nancy Schnabel, Emily Bowman, Cassie Galasso, Gavin Long, Darren Shields, and Wayne Stickler. Garrett is a merchant mariner. Amanda is studying early childhood education and works at a children’s mental health facility.
Tammy Hauser said a memorial service for Ronnie Hauser will be held 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 13, at the American Legion Hall. The Hauser family invites all who knew him to come. Food is potluck style.
American Bald Eagle Foundation Education and Outreach Coordinator Chloe Goodson spent over a week at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., where she completed summer educator training at the Cornell University Lab of Ornithology. She learned how to better identify birds, and worked to utilize the resources of the lab to their fullest potential, she said. She also received more training on how to educate elementary and high school students. She enjoyed networking with teachers from around the globe while getting “tips and tricks” from the “amazing, world-renowned facility.”
Natalie Helms is a new reporter at the Chilkat Valley News. She moved here July 26 from Erie, Pa., and graduated from the University of Missouri in Columbia, Mo., in May. She earned her degree in science and agricultural journalism. Natalie was in Haines last summer working as an intern at the American Bald Eagle Foundation.
Vendors are wanted for the second Upper Valley Community Market at Mosquito Lake School Community Center (MLSCC) 1-4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 21. Tables will be available for a $5 fee for people interested in selling arts and crafts, homemade treats, locally-grown produce, second-hand treasures and the like. The Friends of MLSCC will also sell coffee, baked goods, bratwursts and veggie burgers. The school is located at 1.8 Mile Mosquito Lake Road. Leave a message at 767-5765 to reserve a table.
Friends of Bob Stokley can reach Midge Stokley at P.O. Box 720, Cowley, Wyo., 82420. Bob Stokley, a former Haines harbormaster and policeman, died in Cowley on July 16.
About 20 people attended T.J. Jobbins’ barbecue in the Haislers parking lot Sunday afternoon. Jobbins, who lives in the Haislers complex, invited those who live and work in the building. He said that he wanted to barbecue with people, since the last cook-out he had was six years ago when he moved to Haines.
