Volunteers keep recycling happening
Haines Friends of Recycling would like to recognize the extraordinary volunteers who sustain downtown recycling pickup to benefit the public. Year in and year out, volunteers dedicate several hours weekly to collect and transport recyclables from around town to the HFR recycling center on Small Tracts Road.
While out and about, residents and visitors can deposit drink bottles or cans in bear-proof bins at the Haines Visitor Center, Senior Center/Tlingit Park, cruise ship dock (summer), and Main and Third Avenue (summer). HFR volunteers regularly collect recyclables from those bins. Your excess paper mail is retrieved from the post office several times a week, every week, by volunteers.
Volunteers take your spent printer cartridges to the center from drop-off locations at Howsers IGA, Lutak Lumber and Haines Home Hardware. And if you live in the Senior Village community, you can count on weekly volunteers who transfer recyclables from there. Kudos to these volunteers who are willing to donate time and energy for the betterment of our entire community!
For almost 20 years, HFR has worked to develop programs and facilities that increase local capacity to reduce waste, recycle and reuse resources. Recycling drop off at our Center is free to all, 24/7/365. One hundred percent of the clean materials we collect to recycle are recycled, not landfilled. More than 70 of our 260+ members volunteer, and the above seasonal and year-round town pickup locations are just one way they support community recycling.
Thank you, HFR volunteers – you rock!
