Rusty Compass to open May 1 with new owners

The Rusty Compass building is under new ownership.

Lee and Darcy Robinson bought the building in January and plan to keep it as a full service coffee shop and bakery with a target opening date of May 1.

They plan to offer specialty coffee, pastries and light lunch and hope to turn the Rusty Compass into a community hub.

“We would like to focus on being community centered,” Lee said.

Darcy Robinson has two sisters in town and the couple has visited Haines several times over the years during the summer months.

They recently arrived in town from Buena Vista, Colo. and said they understand what it’s like to live in a small, tight-knit community and plan to settle in as permanent residents.

“We are really excited about being a part of the Haines community,” Lee said. “Speculatively, we would like to stay open year-round and so we’re committed to being full-time, year-long residents.”

Lee said they’ve hired local baker Brandon Haxton to prepare the food. They haven’t hammered out hours of operation yet, but Lee said they might have a soft opening in late April.

The Robinsons are renting the additional spaces in the building as apartmen
