Students to show off puppet skills learned
Five Haines students will put months of puppetry lessons to the test as they perform “Twenty-First Century Faust” at the Chilkat Center on Saturday, May 13.
Byrne Power said Sally Chapell, Matilda Rogers, Naomi Green, LeeAnna Hansen and Olivia Hansen have been taking the Reckoning Motions Puppet Class twice a week since early February.
The group has learned about the history and style of puppetry, watched puppet film, mastered story construction, practiced theater and improvisational skills, and handled puppets.
Power said the group has recently been building sets and backdrops for the upcoming performance using marionette-style puppets.
Power’s storyline starts in medieval time and, with a technological twist, moves to the present.
“We’re looking to have students come back next year and really start puppetry education in town,” Power said. Show times are 3, 5 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 13 in the Chilkat Center basement. Suggested admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children.
