Magpie Gallery opens on Second Avenue

A new art gallery and store on Second Avenue is spotlighting local artists. Its owner also plans to hold community art workshops.

Haines artist Laura Rogers is the owner of the Magpie Gallery, which she said has been a work in progress for months.

“The idea is that it’s joining other people promoting local art and producers in Haines,” Rogers said.

Rogers said when she spotted the small green building vacant up the block from the Visitor Center, she was inspired to open the shop. “It’s a little tiny space in a great location,” she said.

The Magpie Gallery will feature artists each month and local products for sale like Selky Candles by Genny Rietze and Dipper Kitchen products by Rosalie Loewen. The spotlight artist this month is Vanessa Salmon, who weaves textiles on a hand loom.

Rogers is trained in pottery, ceramics and graphic design and hopes to start workshops with other artists for the community to learn new skills. “I want to get other people making (art) and see if we can inspire younger and older people to join,” Rogers said.

The Magpie Gallery opened May 11. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
