Local organizations will host more than 10 camps this summer for Haines youths.

New this year are Tlingit Culture Classes and Programs through the Goldbelt Heritage Foundation and Klukwan School. Justina Hotch will teach students about Tlingit language, food and medicine harvesting and preparation, and Tlingit arts. Call Hotch at 907-957-0106.

Culture Camp with the Chilkoot Indian Association will also teach students ages 1 to 13, and overnight for ages 14-18, about culture and environmental stewardship.

“This is going to be our first really big culture camp. It’s expanding,” said tribal administrator Harriet Brouillette.

The camp is in its second year after revival of the former Chilkoot Culture Camp. Tribe employees Ted Hart and Luke Williams will host the camp this year. “It’s grown into something that is going to bring kids from Hoonah and Juneau,” Brouillette said.

Brouillette said Tlingit and Haida Central Council is contributing funds. Zephr Sincerny, Tlingit instructors Mary Folletti and Heather Powell, two representatives of Goldbelt Heritage Foundation and others will help teach.

Students can hone basketball skills with coach Kyle Fossman this summer at the AKtive Basketball Camp. Students entering third grade through seventh grade will play 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. June 7-9, with eighth through twelfth graders taking over 1 to 4 p.m. in the elementary school gym. Cost is $125. Community Youth Development will offer two sports leagues this summer. Boys and girls age 5 through high school are invited to play in the CYD Soccer League every Tuesday and Thursday June 13-July 25 at Sharnbroich Field. Younger students will begin at 4:30 p.m., with older students playing at 5:30 p.m. Greg Palmieri is head coach. Cost is $30.

Girls entering grades K-12 can participate in Girl Scout Day Camp, June 5-9 at Haines Presbyterian Church. Local girls can “discover the world, connect with other campers and take action in your own life and community.” Suggested donations are $40 per girl, $60 per family. Financial aid is available. Haines students can take the stage at the Chilkat Center for this year’s Youth Theatre Conservatory. Youth ages 8-18 will spend three weeks, June 30-July 23, preparing to perform a full-length production of “The Mad Adventures of Mr. Toad.” Cost is $275, but financial aid is available.
