Local leaders can't make everyone happy

July 27, 2017

I would like to once again thank the Mayor and all the Haines Borough Assembly members for their commitment to a thankless job that involves hours of preparation to be well informed of the many decisions to be made affecting a municipality, and rarely reaps anything but grief from folks that don’t agree with decisions made.

I would also like to express my feelings regarding the upcoming recall election. I feel the charges leveled against three assembly members are groundless. Democracy and the public process often pit opposing views to be discussed and decided on. That process ensures there will always be losers in the discussion. I think we (the community of Haines) have all felt the sting of decisions made that were contrary to our views. One side or another has not always been dominant and so we live with decisions we feel are wrong.

The recall effort is wrong. It is not based on actions that are illegal. Good people are being attacked and I must speak up and support them. Silence on the issue is not OK. Do the right thing. Vote no on the recall.
