Fourth Totem Trot Saturday
August 10, 2017
The Haines Sheldon Museum will host its 4th annual Totem Trot fundraiser Saturday, taking runners on a tour of the town’s totem poles.
Participants can sign up for a half-marathon or walk or run a 5K. The half marathon is set to start at 9 a.m., with registration at 8 a.m. at the museum and a bus at 8:15 a.m. to transport runners to the starting line at Chilkoot Lake State Recreation Site.
Walkers in the 5K register at 9 a.m. and start at 9:30 a.m., while runners register at 9:30 a.m. and start at 10 a.m.
The 5K route takes racers past 18 totem poles on Main Street, Third Avenue, Front Street, Fort Seward and Haines Highway. Half-marathoners will follow a similar route through town.
Museum director Helen Alten said Wednesday 32 people were signed up, most from out of town.
“This event is starting to pay off on one of its goals: to bring people to Haines to support our restaurants, shops and housing,” Alten said.
Participants who raise more than $200 for the fundraiser will have their registration fee waived. It is $35 for the half-marathon and $20 for the 5K. All participants get a “swag bag” and a race T-shirt. Alten said 15 businesses are sponsoring the event. People can register in person or online at totemtrot.com.
