School board needs math lesson

August 17, 2017

The Haines Borough school board does not understand education. People learn not only from what they are “taught” but also what they observe from parents and educators. The school board taught us: 1) It is not important to learn to read or how to comprehend what we read. 2) It is not important to honor a contract and your signature on a contract means nothing. 3) It is not important to work hard, gain skills and do a good job. Instead the school board teaches that you actually can get a 50 percent bonus by doing a deficient job. 4) It is not important to be open, transparent, truthful and prudent with taxpayer money when in a public position. 5) You do not have to be responsible for your actions. If you make a mistake, don’t worry, we will cover it up, pay off any problem employees, and bilk the taxpayers for the bill.

What the school board has taught us is that it is an unaccountable bureaucracy willing to spend our tax dollars in an irresponsible manner, without an explanation, to the determent of the community and the school system.

A recently retired teacher received an incentive of $15,000 after 21 years ($714/year). Tony Habra received a $66,000 for one year. Do the math, Habra’s incentive is 92 times the teacher’s. How is this in any way reasonable or fair? This is a second public request for the return of the $66,000 paid to Tony Habra outside of the contract conditions.
