Aug. 25, 1967

The Chilkat Center for the Arts at Port Chilkoot is nearing completion for a scheduled opening on Saturday, Sep. 16.

The building, formerly E&R Hall for the Army post, has been completely renovated and the interior work is now being done.

The fireplace in the new lobby is waiting for outer stone work and other finishing touches. The seating is here and will be put in with local labor. The seats have been upholstered in flame red nylon.

A motorist heading north on the Haines Highway drives along the picturesque Chilkat River, passes by the majestic Cathedral Peaks, weaves through the tall grass marshes past 10 Mile, rounds a curve at 16 Mile and comes face to face with-YO MAMA.

It's inscribed there on a boulder jutting out toward the road, in spray-painted letters more than a foot high. The message, presumably not the signature of anyone's mother, is one of the more recent scrawling along the scenic highway that gets more paint and a little less scenic each year.

The Haines skate, but skateboarding in Haines is going strong with riders on longboards hitting the streets.

"This place has excellent riding," said Aaron Mattley, a skateboard manufacturer living in Haines. "The riding here has longer hills than Juneau, and there are some grades where you can look up and enjoy the scenery. It's really a joy."

But skateboarding on roads in Haines is illegal.

"It is illegal on all townsite streets," said police chief Greg Goodman. "It's a public safety issue. Unlike bikes or skis or in-line skates, you aren't attached to it. Once you become detached from it, it becomes a missile."
