Shuttle service offers rides to Whitehorse

August 9, 2018

A new shuttle service from Haines to Whitehorse is up and running this month.

David Simmons’ Hinterland Express will shuttle passengers from Haines to Whitehorse and back on Sundays and Mondays through the rest of the month.

Simmons said he planned to start his business at a later date, but acquired his Mercedes Sprinter 10-passenger van earlier than expected. “I’m hoping that by next summer I can run multiple times a week and achieve a lot of bookings through the winter.”

Simmons often travels to and from Germany and recognized the need for a shuttle service when he moved to Haines last year. “I realized how great it was to have a flight from Whitehorse to Juneau, but I can’t get to Haines unless I had a car waiting for me there. It stemmed from my own need for getting from Haines to Germany.”

Hinterland Express will leave the visitor’s center in Haines on Aug. 12, 19 and 26 at 10 a.m. The shuttle will arrive in Haines Junction at 2 p.m. and pick up or drop off passengers at the Village Bakery. The shuttle will drop passengers off in Whitehorse by 4 p.m. at the visitor center and Erik Nielsen Airport. The shuttle leaves the following mornings at 10 a.m.

Although not a requirement, Simmons said he likes to sing and tell stories. “I’ve got stories up the wazoo,” Simmons said. “I lost my voice in the first trip because we sang so much.”

Multi-lingual, Simmons can tell his tales in German, Russian and French, he said.

Reservations can be made at HinterlandExpress.com or by phone at 907-515-7075. One-way trips from Haines to Whitehorse cost $119.
