Glacier Bears place second in Sitka
August 30, 2018
The Haines Glacier Bears boys' and girls' cross country teams placed second among small schools at their first meet in Sitka last weekend.
Siyel George placed sixth overall-competing against runners from nine Southeast schools including Juneau-Douglas, Sitka and Ketchikan-finishing the race in 17 minutes and 18 seconds. Six Haines runners set personal records for the 5K distance.
Avery Williamson, Hannah Boron, Lydia Andriesen, Hannah Getchell, Yzella Miramontes and Raine Winge all broke personal records. The event marked Williamson's first race, and she placed 12th overall among girls.
For the boys, Brennan Palmieri, Eli Williamson, Jayden Hotch, Joseph Rossman, Kamakana Kanahele and Dylan Chapell all set personal records. Chapell shaved four minutes from his previous best time and Kanahele decreased his time by 3 minutes and 30 seconds.
The team consists of 19 high school runners. Coached by Chandler Kemp, the runners have practiced five days a week since July 25. "I think we're off to a really strong start," Kemp said. "They seem to have a lot of fun running together. I think we're going to have a really good chance of qualifying for the state meet, which is exciting."
The team heads to Skagway this weekend and will race in Petersburg the following weekend. The regional crosscountry meet is two weeks later.
