4th of July - Uglys grand marshals of "Olde Fashioned Fourth" parade

June 27, 2019

Visitors should prepare for a blast from the past this Fourth of July.

This year, the theme of the Haines Independence Day celebrations is “Back to Our Roots With an Olde Fashioned 4th.”

“We want to take people back in time,” said Tracey Harmon, executive director of the Haines Chamber of Commerce, which is hosting the festivities.

The 4th of July will start with a 7:00 a.m. flag raising. At 11 a.m., the firing of the cannon will mark the start of the parade.

The parade will add a new competition event: for the first time this year, children will compete for a best costume prize in a “Junior” category. Cash prizes will also be awarded for best dance/musical number, best float, and best individual and dog costumes. Participants will be judged by “The Great Scotts,” a three-person panel made up of Heath Scott, Stephanie Scott, and Scott Rossman. Douglas Olerud and Seth Waldo will be the Masters of Ceremony.

The Uglys were selected to be the Parade Grand Marshals.

Tlingit Park will host festivities all day long. Competitive visitors can join the Pie-Eating Contest, the Spike-Driving Contest, and the footraces. The Bake Sale, Watermelon Feed, and Salmon Bake should satisfy everyone’s hunger.

The day will close with another firing of the cannon and the lowering of the flag at 9 p.m.
