Thank you for supporting Alaskan farms
September 5, 2019
Foundroot is a new farm in Haines who was recently awarded a marketing grant from the Alaska Farmer’s Market Association.
The goal of this funding was to raise community awareness of our weekly Farm Stand at Sarah J’s Coffee and Eatery. We were able to cross-promote Sarah J’s who has long valued locally grown produce and uses our greens in their prepared foods. This grant supported important community entities by purchasing ad space in the Chilkat Valley News and underwriting for KHNS. In addition, this funding emboldened us to expand our farm which led to new wholesale accounts in Haines and we began shipping product weekly to new wholesale partners in Juneau.
The Alaska Farmer’s Market Association has been integral to our success as a beginning farm. They have consistently given financial and informational support, training opportunities, and kept us connected to the broader farming community statewide. Alaska is #1 in the nation for beginning farmers with 46% of us having less than 10 years’ experience and the number of overall farms has increased 30% in the last 5 years as opposed to the nationwide decrease of 3%. With the momentum around locally grown food in Alaska, we feel deeply encouraged as new farmers and are very proud to be part of these statistics. We owe a debt of gratitude to the Alaska Farmer’s Market Association and the Southeast Alaskan community for their continued support in allowing us to be Alaskan farmers. Thank you to everyone for a wonderful season!
