Cambria Goodwin offers free slices of pepperoni pizza to residents through the side door of her restaurant. When she accidentally left it open last week, someone entered the restaurant and stole several hundred dollars from the cash register.

Alpenglow owner Cambria Goodwin has been providing free cheese pizza to residents, leaving the pizza and to-go orders on a table just inside the restaurant's side door. After she forgot to remove the door jam last Tuesday someone walked into the restaurant and took several hundred dollars from the cash register, Goodwin said.

"It's not a huge amount of money, but in the current situation where I'm still having to pay rent on a building I can't operate business as usual, it's pretty significant," Goodwin said.

The door was left ajar from Tuesday evening through Thursday morning. She said when she saw the opened door, she wasn't worried because she's never had anything stolen in Haines. She said the theft added more pressure to an already stressful situation. Despite the turmoil, she remains optimistic and hopeful.

"I hope people are enjoying the free pizza at lunch. I hope it's making people happy. I hope everyone is staying healthy and we can somehow survive this as a community. I just hope more people pull together and are kind to each other instead of taking advantage of each other," Goodwin said. "I think in Haines, that's the sense that I've gotten from the community."

She reported the theft to Haines Police. The incident is under investigation, police chief Heath Scott said.
