Firefighters kept fair blaze from spreading

June 4, 2020

On the morning of June 3, I was feeding a brush fire on the Southeast Alaska State Fairgrounds. I noticed a small flame on the side of the old horse stable about 20 feet away, the result of a windblown spark or ember. If I had one of the fair’s many up-to-date fire extinguishers on the scene, there was a brief window of time in which I could have gotten the fire under control. Instead I contacted the Fire Department.

Scott Bradford arrived on the scene almost immediately, followed by two fire engines and a crew of firefighters. Their response was swift, efficient and effective. They showed extraordinary teamwork, the result of endless hours of training. While one of the stables was lost, they managed to minimize damage to the other one and kept the fire from spreading to the surrounding woods.

To all of you involved in the response, thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Please remember wherever and whenever you burn to have an effective means of controlling the flames on hand.
