Main St. construction will finish this month

June 4, 2020

For the past several weeks, direct access to Main Street from the Haines Highway has been blocked by construction. The project, managed by the Alaska Department of Transportation (DOT), will resurface the highway between Allen Road and milepost 0.7, and install a storm drain system.

The area has a tendency for water to pool and back up in the springtime due to poor drainage, DOT construction project manager John Kajdan said. The storm drain should catch runoff from the roadway.

Glacier Construction, Inc dba. Southeast Road Builders, the project contractor, is scheduled to begin paving the week of June 17, Kajdan said. The contract completion date is June 30.

The Haines Police department confirmed that, despite construction, vehicles are required to stop at the stop sign by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game office.
