Every year Haines bears are rewarded by unsecured attractants and every year few if any citations are issued by the police, ADFG, or the wildlife trooper for causing a “bear attraction nuisance” (HBC chapter 8.20). The very agencies meant to protect the safety of the public and wildlife are causing it to be compromised.

It is crucial that residents be educated to secure attractants, and that citations be issued and fines levied when people fail to do so. It is cheaper, safer, and less nerve-wracking for the public and the bears than repeating our usual cycle.
