Look at CARES Act money to help museum

July 16, 2020

I’m confused on how we, the Haines Borough, are interpreting allowable uses for CARES Act funds. I see some creativity in their use for lunches for seniors, a new ambulance, relief for small businesses (I applied for a small grant from that program), etc.

Since there seems to be quite a bit more money still to be spent, I’d ask all leaders to keep thinking creatively to find ways to bridge us over this fiscal chasm without gutting our quality of life, our infrastructure and losing talented and dedicated people such as seems to be happening with the museum director.

Have all possibilities been exhausted in the case of the museum director? Has the museum director had a chance to be part of the dialog? For instance, would she consider a temporary reduction in work and pay until things pick back up? Would other upper-level borough staff consider the same in order to share the pain? Could the museum’s lost admissions and gift shop income be replaced under the CARES Act?

Considering the wide variety of things other communities are spending their money on, are we supporting the community the best we can?
