The Haines man arrested last week for intent to distribute methamphetamine and heroin has been charged with two additional drug crimes. Police also identified a former resident as the person who mailed the packages containing drugs from Arizona to Haines.

Alaska State Troopers Southeast Cities Against Drugs officers and Haines Police arrested the man last week after tracking suspicious packages the man had received in the mail.

“...the parcel was suspicious because the shippers name was known to the (Postal) Inspection Service as someone who was a previous Haines resident who was involved in the drug milieu, the parcel originated from Arizona, a source state for narcotics coming to Alaska,” according to a search warrant.

The man told police he mailed about $3,200 in cash for two parcels to a return address and claimed he was unaware of who he was paying. He said he “sent money to a return address written on a handwritten note from the first parcel.”

The man was indicted by a grand jury last week and the two additional charges include misconduct in the third and fourth degree for the possession and intent to distribute amphetamine and alprazolam.

Alprazolam is an antianxiety medication and amphetamine is a stimulant prescribed to treat ADHD, obesity and other health disorders.

The man’s case has been transferred to Superior Court. His arraignment is scheduled for Aug. 10.
