State orders municipalities to prepare for COVID-19 vaccine

September 10, 2020

The Haines Borough’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) has been instructed by the state to prepare to administer a COVID-19 vaccine by the end of the year.

“The vaccine will need to be administered as a ‘set’ with one vaccine initially and a second booster three weeks later,” EOC incident commander Carolann Wooton wrote in a memo to the Haines Borough Assembly.

Wooton said she doesn’t know exactly when the vaccine will be ready, but the goal is to be prepared.

Training will involve a tabletop exercise in coordination with the Haines Health Center and the state’s Division of Public Health. The EOC is working to schedule a time for the exercise, Wooton said at Tuesday’s Haines Borough Assembly meeting. She said she will continue to provide updates as the logistics fall into place.

As of Wednesday, Haines had no active COVID-19 cases. The borough’s last reported case was in late July.
