Alaska's only veneer plant holds open house

Alaska's only veneer plant was on display Saturday when the Schnabel Lumber Co. and Westward Timber Products held open house. Bad weather dampened the occasion--Gov. Keith Miller was prevented from flying in to attend the dedication of the new plant.

In the top photo is the heart of the veneer plant operation: a strip of veneer is peeled from a hemlock log at the lathe. From here, the veneer is cut into strips and sorted according to grade and size.

The lower picture looks toward the sorting end of the veneer plant. The conveyor belts to the left carry the freshly-peeled veneer to the cutting and sorting area. The veneer will be shipped out to be glued into plywood.

Annexation opponents lash out against council

A preemptive strike was launched this week against annexation plans by the City of Haines.

A feisty crowd packed the city council chambers Monday in protest of the council's workshop on possible annexation of some areas near the city where there are land-use controversies, including faulty septic systems.

The swift and furious outcry resembled the recent reaction to a proposal by the Haines Borough Assembly to hold a referendum on a home rule charter. Having succeeded in blocking that proposal and electing a new borough Mayor, a few of the same people returned to take on the council.

Once again, opponents railed against what they view as an attempted power grab by big government.

"I moved here three years ago from Wasilla, where they got too big for their britches, too," said Kathy Thompson of Small Tracts Road. She and her husband have installed an expensive well and septic system on their property and shouldn't be forced to pay for city water and sewer, she said.

Voters lean left and right

The Chilkat Valley mostly followed statewide trends in Tuesday's general election, although Haines townsite voters tilted more Democratic and Klukwan leaned more Republican than Alaska and districtwide averages.

In the three-way race for the U.S. Senate seat, Haines voters split between Democrat Scott McAdams and write-ins presumably for Republican Lisa Murkowski, 37% each.

Joe Miller got 25%.

The statewide vote was 41% write-ins, 34% Miller and 24% McAdams.
