Haines Hot Shots Jackson Long and Alex Weerasinghe shoot trap Oct. 31 in a national meet.

The Haines Hot Shots competed in a national, virtual trap-shooting event, the Midway Hometown Challenge, on Oct. 31 amid strong winds, cold temperatures and rain.

"This was a virtual event so that we could compete statewide without the need to travel," head coach Shane Horton said. "The good side of a virtual meet is we don't need to travel. The bad side is that the conditions that one team shoots in can be markedly different than the conditions hundreds of miles away."

The Hot Shots competed against teams from across the country. The results from the event are still being compiled.

Dawson Holm led the weekend's scoreboard among team members shooting 33 out of 50 targets followed by Jackson Long and Alex Weerasinghe with 32 hits.

The event comes after the group declined to travel to Juneau this fall for a tournament, and opted not to travel to Anchorage for the state meet in June due to pandemic travel concerns. The Hot Shots will practice once more before calling it quits for the winter.

The group is planning its annual Thanksgiving Turkey Shoot for Saturday, Nov. 21 at 10 a.m. at the shooting range. Horton encouraged newcomers to attend the event and said shotguns will be provided to those who don't own a firearm.

"If people come inexperienced, we'll coach them," Horton said. "It's a good opportunity to get out of your house and move around and be active."
