Lady Bears fall in first away game at Craig
February 25, 2021
The Lady Bears took on the Craig Panthers on the road Tuesday, the first game of two this week against Craig. After two scoreless minutes, Sadie Anderson helped the Bears gain a four-point lead. With 1:30 left in the quarter, the Panthers were up two points. Alison Benda tied the score 8-8 with a fast-break layup in the final 11 seconds of the quarter. Benda finished the game with 12 points.
In the second quarter, Craig forced Haines to make turnovers. This allowed the Panthers to outscore the Lady Bears 6-0 until Haines scored their first points with 5:30 remaining in the quarter. With a half second left on the clock, Craig’s Syvannah Bird shot from the half court line, but missed short. Craig led 26-17 at the end of the half.
With two minutes left in the third quarter, Craig began to full-court press the Lady Bears. The continued pressure forced Haines to make turnovers when inbounding, which gave the Panthers the ball under their basket. The Craig Panthers defeated the Lady Bears 67-31.
The Lady Bears were set to take on the Panthers again on Wednesday. They were scheduled to play Wrangell but the games were canceled due to COVID-19 complications. Unlike previous games, masks were not mandated while playing, but are required on the bench. The Bears will return home Feb. 28 and take on Petersburg the following weekend at home.
