The SEARHC clinic is offering the COVID-19 vaccine to 12- to 15-year-olds. The first youth clinic was held on May 26 in Haines.

SEARHC marketing director Maegen Bosak said 34 12- to 15-year-olds have received the vaccine as of this week. “The Pfizer vaccine is being offered to those at least 12 years of age,” Bosak said. “Parental consent is required for all under 18 years of age.”

SEARHC opened vaccines to 12-year-olds and older as soon as the CDC announced the Pfizer was safe for these ages. Bosak said Haines individuals were encouraged to register shortly after CDC approval because it was anticipated the federal government would approve 12- to 15-year-old vaccinations almost immediately.

Fifteen-year-old Luke Davis received his first COVID-19 shot on May 26. “I choose to get the vaccine so life would start to get more normal again,” said Davis. “I had no side effects. The second shot seems to produce more side effects, though, so we’ll see what happens.”

Davis will be a junior at Haines High School. He said that being vaccinated will hopefully make school easier. He said he believes that if a lot of middle-schoolers and high-schoolers get vaccinated this summer, masks will not be mandated in school and sports travel will be possible.
