Clerk says local Dominion voting software is secure

The Haines Brough’s voting software and equipment is a product of Dominion Voting Systems, the same company embroiled in the Trump Campaign’s allegations of mass voter fraud, and interim borough manager and clerk Alekka Fullerton said she wants the public to be confident in the integrity of borough elections.

Fullerton told the CVN that a volunteer election worker asked her which company does the borough’s programming after hearing from a concerned voter.

“Dominion Voting is in the middle of a scandal because president Trump, his campaign, started some conspiracy theories with respect to the programming of the Dominion machines,” Fullerton said. “I want to assure the public that even though we do have Dominion programming, nothing leaves the Haines Borough. It doesn’t get published on the internet or anything like that because the processing is just done here in-house and I go through a laborious testing procedure.”

Fullerton said she’s tested various scenarios on 25 test ballots such as using different colored pens or wadding them up. She tests the results of the tallies from all four voting machines against what the results should be.

“It took several hours but I have checked all machines and they all got the exact same expected results,” Fullerton said. “After I test the machines, I then seal it so that nobody can access the memory cards, and the tape has also been sealed so you can’t add anything to the programming.”

Voters can put their ballots into the machine and the computer will tally the votes and print them out.

“We’ll check it against our (voter roles) to make sure it has the same number of votes,” Fullerton said. “The ballot workers will sign it.”

The municipal election is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 5 from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the ANB Hall for Haines District One and at the Klehini Valley Fire Hall for Haines District Two.

Fullerton said the borough has used Dominion Voting software for at least five years, and likely longer. A Dominion employee has filed defamation lawsuits against the Trump campaign and Newsmax among other individuals and media outlets.

Four candidates are running for two open assembly seats. Five candidates are running for four open school board seats.
