Basketball games postponed due to COVID-19 outbreak
January 20, 2022
Due to a recent COVID-19 outbreak across Southeast Alaska, three Region V conference basketball games have been postponed until February. Haines will be playing Petersburg at home Feb. 4-5 and Metlakatla Feb. 25-26.
The last basketball games were Dec. 17-18, when the Lady Bears and Bears took on Juneau-Douglas’ and Thunder-Mountain’s junior varsity teams in their respective games. The crowd was limited to students and athletes’ parents.
The athletes and band members were tested before and after the games based on the school's testing protocols.
On Jan. 4, the Bears’ home games against Petersburg were canceled due to COVID-19 and the lack of ferry service. Away-games against Craig and Wrangell were also canceled due to COVID-19.
Activities director Lynzee Swinton is organizing a home tournament from Jan. 28-29. The junior varsity teams of Ketchikan, Mt. Edgecumbe, and Sitka will be attending. A Juneau team may also attend.
The Region V tournament is scheduled for March 6-13 in Ketchikan. The basketball teams, cheer team, and pep-band will be traveling for this tournament. The top two teams will qualify for the state tournament March 16-19.
