The Lady Bears were defeated by the Metlakatla Miss Chiefs both night in the final home games of the season last weekend. The ladies lost 28-48 on Friday night and 41-56 on Saturday night.
The Lady Bears lost the tip-off, but played tight defense and kept the Miss Chiefs from scoring in their first possession. Junior Alison Benda scored the first points of the game with a fast-break layup. Haines trailed 4-7 at the end of the first quarter.
The Miss Chiefs kicked off the second quarter with one successful free throw after being fouled on a layup. The Lady Bears scored their first points of the quarter with one minute left until halftime when Benda passed ahead to junior Grace Long-Godinez who scored two points off her fast-break layup. The Lady Bears trailed by 9 points going into halftime.
Metlakatla scored the first points of the third quarter with an inside pass-and-post move. Junior MacKenzy Dryden responded with a deep three-pointer. The Miss Chiefs dominated the third quarter with 18 points. The Lady Bears trailed 12-35 at the end of the third.

Senior Sadie Anderson was recognized before the Saturday night game. Grace Long-Godinez and Gracie Stickler thanked Anderson for her hard work and dedication throughout her high school career. The team gifted Anderson with a signed basketball, candy, flowers, a pillow, and balloons.
“Senior night was really special,” said Anderson. “(Coach) Coleman was like ‘It’s not senior night, it’s Sadie night.’ It felt really good to be celebrated after I’ve worked so hard for these past four years. It was nice knowing that they care about me and that they’re going to miss me. I’m definitely going to miss them.”
Following Anderson’s recognition, the last home game of the season kicked off. The Miss Chiefs started off the game with a full-court press. Long-Godinez took the first lead of the game for Haines with a right-side corner three-pointer. The Bears led 9-6 at the end of first quarter.
Dryden scored the first points of the second quarter with a fast-break layup. The Miss Chiefs led 16-14 going into halftime.
Metlakatla kicked off the third quarter with an up-and-under post move. The Miss Chiefs outscored the Lady Bears 20-6 in the third quarter.
Down by more than 20 points, the Lady Bears set up Anderson for a three-point shot. Anderson missed short, but said it was still fun to be given that opportunity.
“It was fun,” said Anderson. “I wish I would have made it, but I’m okay that I didn’t. It was just for fun, and it was pretty close to going in.”
The Lady Bears lost the game 41-56. Anderson led the team with 14 points.
