Artists get ready for First Friday on July 1

June 23, 2022

Photos, artwork and the opportunity to swing a titanium hammer will be offered at First Friday art events starting at 5 p.m. July 1 at several locations around town.

Color photos of local scenes and landscapes by Brittany Simkin will be featured at The Beach Rose.

The dozen or more photos of landscapes and wildlife reflect a range of lighting and perspectives, said Tawny Darling, who opened the gallery and business in Fort Seward’s historic telegraph building last month.

Simkin said she took up photography years ago but only recently picked it back up. The time she spent home with her son gave her an opportunity to take college classes and put together the first public exhibit of her work.

While Haines has inspired a lot of photography, there are so many different ways to capture local scenes that photographers needn’t step on each other’s toes, she said. Simkin will be on hand at the exhibit, and also will have notecards and postcards for sale.

The Beach Rose is located at the intersection of Beach Road and Portage Street.

Hammer technology is changing and residents get a chance to check out the latest – including a titanium hammer – during First Friday at the Hammer Museum.

Museum founder Dave Pahl said a titanium-headed hammer is lightweight but still durable enough to drive a nail, which theoretically might make it a better tool. He’s inviting local hammer-swingers to try one out and see if they prefer it to the standard, steel-headed models.

Other modern hammers on display will include ones with adjustable heads for working in tight spaces, anti-vibration hammers, ones designed specifically for left-handed carpenters and ones that dispense nails.

The first nail-holding hammers came out in the 1950s and now all major manufacturers offer such a model, which typically employ magnets. Pahl recently authored, “The Improved Hammer,” about advances in hammer technology. He expects to receive the first editions soon.

An exhibit of works by Haines artist Katie Ione Craney will be featured at the Port Chilkoot Distillery tasting room from 5 to 8 p.m. July 1.

Craney’s mixed-media works will include reclaimed pieces, found objects and repurposed materials, photo transparencies, and phrases written in braille. They incorporate her own photos and ones by resident Garett Montgomery.

The two-dozen pieces, all recent works, were inspired by the Haines landscape and they incorporate items a person would find there, such as bullet casings, she said. The pieces will remain up after the opening.

The American Bald Eagle Foundation is offering a Family and Friends Night during First Friday that includes activities for youngsters on the natural history themes “How Birds Fly,” “Vocalization” and “Big Cats.”

The activities involve stations hosted by ABEF interns and the activities will be offered from 5 to 7 p.m., said Ashley Bivin, ABEF’s curator of collections and exhibits. People of all ages are welcome to participate, she said.
