Who's talking about a mine?

September 22, 2022

I love Haines, just like you.  It is home.  I do not want a mine that could poison this place.  Oh man, phew - that feels good to finally say out loud.  Try it.  Most of the time I just want to pretend they are not trying to put a sulfide-acid tailings mine into the headwaters of our salmon fishery, on the side of a mountain on an earthquake fault that gets 54 inches of rain per year.  It is easier to just not talk about it.  And I get that, too- you don’t want to be associated with the greenies.  I am a greenie at heart and at times the greenies annoy me.  But being annoyed isn’t a good enough reason to poison our valley, straight up.  As a smokejumper I’ve seen most of this state.  Put a mine up in the Interior with the swamp donkeys instead.  Not in Haines.

There is good news though-- you don’t have to talk about not wanting a mine here.  You can just vote that way.  I mean, c’mon, isn’t it a bad idea to put people onto the assembly who work for the mine?  Does anyone believe they will vote for what is good for the whole community over what is good for their employer and their own job security?

I’m excited to vote for Bill, Ben and Eric because they love the Haines that I love, with a clean river and healthy fish.
